IMA World Health is seeking applications for an Implementation Lead for an anticipated DFID-funded violence against women and girls (VAWG) funding opportunity in Malawi. The Strengthening Access to Justice and VAWG Prevention program is designed to strengthen the capacity of communities and institutions to prevent and respond to Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence against Children (VAC) and to improve the accessibility, responsiveness, and accountability of the justice system for women and girls living with violence. S/he will provide overall leadership and management of the field-based aspects of the two-phase, six-year program, which includes both community-level and national-level interventions. The Implementation Lead will ensure interventions are implemented effectively to reduce prevalence of GBV and VAC in target districts and improve access to and quality of justice services for survivors across Malawi. The Gender Technical Specialist/Implementation Team Lead will report directly to the Team Leader of the program.


  • Serve as lead technical expert for the proposed program, ensuring staff achieve quality implementation standards
  • Oversee field implementation teams in multiple target districts, ensuring staff achieve assigned outputs and deliverables according to the work plan
  • Hold regional teams and project partners/sub-contractors accountable to achieve output targets and carry out related activities at the regional level; mentor staff as needed to achieve results
  • Contribute to quality and timely reporting for the project, in conjunction with the M&E Director and according to contract guidelines
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the annual work plan and M&E plan
  • Liaise closely with the technical leadership team to ensure sound technical implementation of activities
  • In collaboration with Team Lead, engage with DFID, the Ministry, and other key stakeholders; represent the project on relevant technical working groups

The position requires a competent and experienced person with the following attributes:

  • University degree in public health, social work, the social sciences, or a related field is required; advanced degree in relevant field is strongly preferred
  • At least 8 years of experience providing technical assistance and implementing related development programming in high prevalence GBV environments including one or more of the following technical areas: VAWG, VAC, access to justice, community social and behavioral change strategies.
  • A thorough understanding of the drivers of GBV in Malawi will be an asset
  • At least five years of experience working on donor-funded health, gender, or social protection programs; experience with DFID a plus
  • At least 8 years of experience working with programming in contexts similar to Malawi; experience working in Southern Africa and (particularly Malawi) will be strongly preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • Ability to travel internally within Malawi on a regular basis to project districts
